This district counted on you and you let us down.
Whether it’s true or not, “they lied to me” is NOT an acceptable excuse for switching your vote to bring the CRomnibus to the floor without a rider attached forbidding appropriations for the President’s executive orders on immigration.
First, there is no way you had the time to review a 1,600+ page bill. Why would you support bringing a bill to the House floor that you have not reviewed and do not fully understand? Did the 3rd congressional district of Indiana elect Nancy Pelosi? Do not ever, under any circumstances, support bringing a bill to the floor of the House that you have not read and do not fully understand.
Second, aside from having no time to read the bill, you said that you would not support the CRomnibus unless it included a rider forbidding appropriations for the President’s executive orders, and you knew when you switched your procedural vote that it did not have that rider attached. This looks an awful lot like one of those “bait and switch” tactics in which party leadership uses a rank and file member to get a bill to the floor that doesn’t require that member’s vote to pass. Who the hell do you represent? The Republican party or your district?
Third, because you had no time to read the bill but still supported it going to the House floor for a vote, the next session of Congress (which you are included in) can do nothing except reprimand the Department of Homeland Security. My question to you, sir, is how will refusing appropriations the Department of Homeland Security fix this catastrophe?
If you were truly duped into switching your vote on the CRomnibus, then prove it.
Come January, help the next session of Congress select a new Speaker of the House. John Boehner has already proven himself ineffective and untrustworthy with the issues that this session of the House has faced. Surely, he will be just as ineffective and untrustworthy as Speaker in the next session of the House. If House membership does not change this leadership and select leaders that will use the full powers of the House of Representatives to cut federal spending, to repeal ObamaCare, and to make this administration follow the laws it passes, then this President will continue to make Congress irrelevant.
In his mind, HE controls the power of the purse and he is not afraid to shut down the government and point the finger of blame toward anyone that opposes him.
I, like many others who are concerned by this administration’s actions, have tried to warn our members of Congress that if they did not respond to the President’s executive orders on immigration in this CRomnibus, the next session of Congress would pay the price. Well, Congressman, get ready for a long and bumpy ride because this President has now been emboldened by the next session of Congress’ inability to defer appropriations or to do anything substantial until September of 2015. By then, his executive orders on immigration will be the least of your worries.
Finally, I can not stress this enough: do not, I repeat, do NOT support bringing bills to the House floor for a vote under any circumstances until you have read them and fully understand them. Although I do not expect you to support every bill you vote to bring to the House floor, I do insist that before you support bringing a bill to the House floor for a vote that you have ample time to review and understand it.
I do not think this is too much to ask for.
You wanted the job. You got the job. Now either do the job or get the hell out of the way so someone else can.
One pissed off constituent.
