The looming budget deadline presents the final opportunity for Americans to stop the Patient Protection & Affordable Health Care Act.
The plan is simple.
The Continuing Resolution that has kept the federal government running, despite the lack of a budget, is set to expire on September 30, 2013, and Tom Graves (House Rep. from Georgia) has drafted heavily sponsored legislation that will include the defunding of ObamaCare as a precondition to continued budget talks.
- Due to unfunded federal mandates that doctors and insurance companies must comply with, such as the coverage of preexisting conditions and no “out-of-pocket” expenses for contraceptives or HIV testing, insurance premiums have risen about $2,000 per year since the passage of ObamaCare; ironically, this amount is what proponents of the law promised Americans in annual savings. Consequently, employers have cut employment levels, hours, wages, and benefits for active employees, effectively reducing the ability of those employees to afford their monthly bills, let alone purchase health insurance. To add insult to injury, the Internal Revenue Service then penalizes an uninsured employee whose benefits and hours have been cut for failure to purchase a health insurance plan he or she cannot afford.
- According to a national survey of physicians, 60% of doctors surveyed believe that the health care law will have a negative impact on patient care; more than half of them also indicated that it would have a negative impact on their doctor-patient relationships. In addition, because of the lack of tort reform, 65% of them indicated that it encourages defensive medicinal practices that limit liability rather than benefits patients. Many physicians already limit the amount of Medicare patients they are willing to take, and the health care law does nothing to encourage them to accept more. As a matter of fact, it further limits the availability of doctors to Medicare patients due to the terms, conditions, and bureaucracy accompanied with treating Medicare patients.
- The health care law allowed the Health & Human Services Department to create the “Federal Data Services Hub”, a network that stores data about YOUR health insurance carrier, YOUR medical and financial information, YOUR Social Security number, and a slew of other information about YOU and YOUR family. This database is intended to be used by the HHS to determine insurance eligibility, as well as for the Internal Revenue Service to determine who is penalized for non-compliance and who is eligible for subsidies under the health care law.
- Religious organization and unions who initially supported federally sponsored health care reforms, such as the Catholic Church and the Teamsters, are finding that their support was misplaced. Currently, there are more than 200 plaintiffs involved in over 60 lawsuits over unfunded / immoral mandates. In addition, the leaders of three major U.S. unions have written a public letter of concern that Obama-care will “destroy the very health and well-being of our members along with millions of other hardworking Americans.”
Chances are, President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Reid, and House Minority Leader Pelosi will continue to demagogue this issue rather than acknowledge and address the problems the health care law has already caused. Because they do not understand the 2,000+ page law any more than the average citizen, they will drone on about the preexisting condition and the no “out-of-pocket” cost mandates that remain unfunded, while avoiding any discussions about the specifics of implementation.
On January 1, 2014, the Internal Revenue Service will begin penalizing uninsured Americans through the tax code by enforcing the “individual mandate”; tens of millions of Americans will find themselves subject to fines for not purchasing a benefit that their employers no longer carry and that their wages make unaffordable to them. This, my friends, is the last chance to stop this monstrosity and the fight will not be a pretty one if the members of the House of Representatives stick to their guns. I have little doubt that proponents of the health care law will encourage the President and his progressive allies to shut down the federal government over the issue and fully expect to hear them blame who they always blame for every problem that exists in America today: Republicans.
Therefore, if you are one of the many Americans who have already been negatively impacted or have concerns about the implications of the Patient Protection & Affordable Health Care Act, then it is vital that YOU contact YOUR district representative to let him or her know how you stand on this issue. Each and every member of the House that has pledged to defund ObamaCare will be put under tremendous pressure – the only way they will be successful is if they know that they have YOUR support.
