It seems as if the show will continue where it left off as Congress reconvenes immediately after the Labor Day holiday. In a move that is bound to ‘stir the political pot’, President Barack Obama has been scheduled to speak to joint session of Congress on September 7th to present his economic/jobs plan.
To people who do not follow politics closely, this appears to be a President offering Congress valid solutions to the economic and unemployment challenges the United States faces. But to the politically astute, who remain aware that politics is a dirty game to many United States representatives, this is little more than ‘face time’ and ‘hype’ for an event that will do absolutely nothing to change the partisanship in Congress.
President Barack Obama
Wake up! Your policies are causing the same stagflation effect on America that Jimmy Carter’s did in the 1970s. Your administration, inherited or not, is dealing with a stagnant economy combined with inflation. Put the partisanship aside by beginning to chastise your own political affiliations and party before chastising the intentions or rhetoric of the other. Economics has never been a strong point of the Democratic Party… and before you go citing Bill Clinton as some economic genius, you had better do your research. It was House Speaker, Newt Gingrich, who forced Bill Clinton to balance the budget to the tune of a government shutdown and his political career, but I digress… so what is wrong acting in a bipartisan way by getting help from Republicans to fix this mess? They are your political rivals, not an enemy to declare war on.
The time for rhetoric has passed Mr. President. You and the Democratic Party are – as responsible – for the political divide that contributed to the S&P credit downgrade as the Republicans who stand against your policies. YOU, Barack Obama, are no longer a Senator representing a State full of people. YOU are the President of the United States and, as such, are sworn by oath to uphold the Constitution and represent the will of the majority that elected you. It is many of your own policies and actions that sparked and stoked the political “shellacking” in the 2010 mid-terms, as well as your refusal to change direction when they occurred.
Make no mistake about it, more Americans are aware of the political environment than you think. They tire of excuses from their representatives and grow weary of watching as their country approaches economic catastrophe while YOU continue to campaign for and promote more tax and spend policies. YOU give speeches asking people to “tone down the rhetoric”, while simultaneously remaining silent as people in your own Party use words such as: “terrorist, racist, hostage taker, extremist” against their fellow Americans. Be a leader, get your house in order or get out-of-the-way.
As Congress Reconvenes
Each and every Senator and Representative needs to take a good hard look at their approval numbers that have not left the 15-20% range over the past 3 years. The absurd notion that is a phenomenon caused by extreme partisanship has become a failing argument for both Parties involved. Americans are unhappy with Congress because of the way it conducts business, pure and simple.
Is it too much to ask that a bill either pass or fail on its own merits?
Americans tire of Congressional legislative packages that group unrelated legislation together. From the tangled mess of an education bill – tied to the debt ceiling, to the aid of hurricane disaster victims – tied to the financing of electric cars; the legislative process has become a cesspool of collective bargaining that has made it impossible to get anything accomplished without screwing something else up in the process.
Is it too much to ask for adult debate in lieu of childish name-calling?
An overwhelming majority of Americans fully understand the financial debacle the United States is in. Debates over who and/or what specifically caused the debt problem are irrelevant to fixing the problem. It is time to set those childish blame games aside for another day and get to work on a plan to aggressively deal with these problem as adults. The everyday, average citizen must balance their budgets and keep their credit scores in line or suffer the consequences. They either act foolishly and keep spending until they find themselves in bankruptcy or they make adult decisions to limit the credit to emergency funds and make meaningful changes to their spending habits and pay off their debts and restore their credit rating. Why should the governed believe that the credit, spending, or saving habits of a nation are any different, especially a nation privileged to own with the worlds reserve currency?
Is it too much to ask that Party politics take a back seat to the consent of the governed?
There are still far too many seniority Congressional members who have relied on Party driven politics to justify their voting records. We have witnessed the pressure of, former House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi applied upon the members of her party to pass the Affordable Health Care Act of 2009 as she told them, “we must pass the bill to find out what is in the bill”. Not to be outdone, current House Speaker, John Boehner recently told House Republicans on the debt ceiling issue, “get your asses in line”.
Neither of these House Speakers had the right to bully anyone’s Congressional Representative into voting against the will of their own Districts that elected them, however, that is EXACTLY what they did. Behind the scenes, these people put pressure on Party-line dissenters by threatening defamation and abusing their seniority by guaranteeing a ‘no’ vote to any future legislation attempts by themselves and their ‘buddies’. This is what is commonly known as “thug politics” and it has become commonplace in Washington, along both political Party lines, leaving entire electorates with ineffectual representatives.
A Persistence Of Vision
This chart was extremely influential in my decision to stay Independent of political Parties. The first eagle’s head looking left with one eye visible represents the President of the United States. The second eagle’s head in the middle with two visible eyes represents Senate and House. The last eagle’s head facing right with one eye visible is the United States court system. All three heads attach to one body, representing the United States, as a whole. But the most striking thing about this image are the left and right wings in correlation to the chart above the eagle itself. While many people interpret the wings as the Democratic and Republican Parties, the truth is that they represent the “social” and the “fiscal” wings of the federal government.
The left-wing is the “problem solving” wing that is responsible to continually look for problems to solve out of compassion for its fellow-man. The right-wing is the “conservation” wing that is responsible for conserving resources, finances, and people’s freedoms.
If the problem solvers of the nation are allowed to attempt to solve every problem that exists, regardless of cost and the right-wing fails to exercise its authority to reign in fantasy spending with realistic funding, then the eagle heads left, toward tyranny. However, if the left-wing fails to see the problems that need solving and/or the right-wing tries to save money for the sake of saving it, then government loses its value to the governed and the eagle heads right, toward anarchy. There is only one way to keep this eagle flying and that is by correcting the sizes of the social and fiscal wings to match so that they are evenly balanced and the eagle can maintain its course in flight.
So, for now, this Independent tends to favor the TEA Party’s stance of smaller government via spending cuts, a new tax code that is both FAIR and FLAT to consumers and businesses alike, the repeal of Obamacare, and the demand for Congress to reform entitlement programs that we are currently paying for that are likely to fail in the future.
